Ahat: /* Client DNS Service */

Summary
Every domain requires a way to be found on the Internet, which is largely controlled by DNS (Domain Name Service).

If you've used the Internet, you've already used DNS. For every website you visit, you are actually visiting an IP address (e.g., 198.60.22.2). But remembering an IP address for every website a person wants to visit would be very difficult. DNS essentially resolves easy to remember names into numbers. DNS is an important piece of the puzzle in getting your website up and running.

The first step in the process is registering the domain name you would like with a registrar. Through the registrar, you can identify which name servers are responsible for DNS. These name servers then have the authority to resolve your website. You can register a new domain with XMission or even transfer an existing domain to XMission at https://domains.xmission.com.

If you've registered your domain name through XMission, and we are also hosting your website, you shouldn't need to update your name server information. By default, any domain name registered through XMission automatically points to our name servers.

If for any reason you want to update your name servers with us, simply log in to manage your domain at https://domains.xmission.com. Be sure to log in with the credentials you originally used when registering your domain name.

If XMission is hosting your website but you registered your domain through another registrar, you may need to update the name server information to point towards XMission. This is typically a very simple process with most registrars. Although the interface with each of them may be slightly different, your name servers need to point to XMission's name servers as follows:

Client DNS Service
The majority of XMission's customers need only be concerned with client DNS service. The following servers are what you should use for any/all client configuration that asks for DNS servers. These servers are also available off our network for XMission customer use.

:IPv4:  198.60.22.2   198.60.22.22
Utah
:IPv6:  2607:fa18::1  2607:fa18::2
Yellowstone
:IPv6: 2607:24c0:2000:23::11
Colorado
:IPv6: 2607:24c0:3000:33::11

Authoritative DNS Service
Authoritative DNS service is what handles your domain name if you have domain based email or a website at XMission. If have registered your domain with XMission, you should review your registration to make sure it includes the server addresses below.

If you use XMission for secondary domain name services, please ensure that your DNS software is configured to permit access from all our authoritative nameservers on both an IPv4 and IPv6 basis. Also permit UDP/TCP port 53 from all our nameservers in your firewall. Failure to do so can trigger false alarms from your firewall. Although XMission provides multiple authoritative name servers, all sync with ns.xmission.com to maintain identical data.

:*ns.xmission.com:  IPv4 - 166.70.254.2    IPv6 - 2607:FA18::11
:*ns1.xmission.com: IPv4 - 204.228.159.2   IPv6 - 2607:FA18:0:A::A
:*ns2.xmission.com: IPv4 - 207.115.80.155  IPv6 - 2001:560:4403:CA5C:ADED:BEEF:DEBA:C1E
:*ns3.xmission.com: IPv4 - 66.109.111.7    IPv6 - 2001:1868:2003::7

Once you've updated your name servers to point towards XMission, you're all set. Please keep in mind DNS changes can take anywhere from 12-48 hours as DNS servers around the globe update.

Plesk Shared Hosting: Securing Your Sites
The section below would be for advanced users. If you have questions on how to secure your site or purchase an SSL certification you can contact our billing department Monday - Friday from 9am - 5pm.

Free Let's Encrypt SSL
If you do not collect any sensitive data on your website (such as peoples names/addresses/SSN/etc.) or credit card payments, you may just need a Lets Encrypt SSL Certificate. Please review https://wiki.xmission.com/Lets_Encrypt to see if it will meet your needs.

What is a CSR and how is it used?
A CSR is a Certificate Signing Request. This helps show authenticity from the server the website lives on, and allows the generation of a private key. Once the CSR is generated, you can send it to the company you wish to buy your SSL certificate from. The following steps will walk you through that process.

Creating CSR
SSL certificates secure transfer of sensitive data from visitors to your website, and also verify the site identity. Below you can find two lists of SSL certificates. The first one showing certificates that you use for securing your websites and the other one showing certificates that you purchased.

* From side panel click on "Websites and Domains".

* Click on the domain you wish to use your SSL Certificate on.
* Next choose "SSL/TLS Certificates" under Security.

* To manage or add a CSR choose Download or remove existing certificates - Manage towards the bottom of the page.

* Next choose "Add SSL Certificate".

* Optional: Permanent SEO-safe 301 redirect from HTTP to HTTPS. This option makes it so your site can only be viewed on the secured page. If this isn’t selected, customers can still see the non-secure page unless the website is hard coded to perform this same function.

* Click "OK" at the bottom.

After saving the changes, related services for the website will be automatically restarted. Within 1-3 minutes the new SSL certificate should be serving and displaying properly if you refresh the page.

Ahat: /* Valid SPF for XMission with additional sending services */

SPF and DKIM are two important security methods domain owners have of "authorizing" specific email servers to send mail on their behalf. Besides providing greater deliverability of your messages, these mechanisms prevent fraudsters from sending spoofing emails as your domain.

These TXT records are entered by the domain owner wherever the domain's DNS record is managed, which may be with the registrar or hosting provider. DKIM (Domain Key Identified Mail) also adds public key cryptography for deeper validation.

XMission advises all Zimbra clients to configure SPF & DKIM. It may sound a bit daunting but is really not very complicated. This document will walk you through it.

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT TXT RECORD ENTRY: Depending on the syntax requirements of your DNS system you may have to include or omit the quotation marks for the record to be properly enabled. Other DNS entries on your domain should provide quick visual guidance on protocol. XMission DNS systems do not use quotation marks.

SPF
The following is the most commonly applied SPF (Sender Policy Framework) record for XMission email customers but it is imperative you understand how and why this is applied. IMPORTANT: It is critical that you read and understand all SPF information below before applying the record to your domain as you could break email delivery.

Host !! Record Type !! Value
@ (base domain) || TXT || "v=spf1 a mx include:_spf.xmission.com ~all"

How It Works
Any SPF record is a string of one more more potential mail sources, prefixed by a character indicating the policy for mail source. An example of a common SPF record:

+ Example Syntax
Host !! Record Type !! Value
@ (base domain) || TXT || "v=spf a mx ~all"

In this case, it says that the A and MX records for the domain are allowed to send, and all other mail fails (but with a "softfail", so that mail isn't actually rejected). "a", "mx" and "all", are all individual mail sources. The "~" prefixed to the "all" source is a policy denoting that mail from the source should be considered a "SoftFail".

+ Sources & Definitions
Flag !! Source Type
a || DNS A record
mx || MX record
ptr || PTR record
ip4 || IPv4 address or subnet
ip6 || IPv6 address or subnet
include || The contents of another domain's SPF record
all || Any mail source (generally used at the end to provide a default policy)

+ Prefix Characters
Prefix !! Definition
+ || Pass (Valid for SPF)
- || Fail (Invalid, and reject mail)
~ || SoftFail (Invalid, but still accept)
? || Neutral (...whatever...)

XMission Shared Hosting clients can learn to manage DNS records here.

Valid SPF for XMission
Any SPF record for a domain sending through XMission should contain "include:_spf.xmission.com".

If you prefer a less identifiable entry then a minimum inclusion would have the following four sources:
* ip4:166.70.11.0/24
* ip4:166.70.13.0/24
* ip4:166.70.198.0/24
* ip4:198.60.22.0/24

Note that the SPF record policy is a decision of the domain owner's. If they want to Fail or SoftFail on all, add other sources, etc., is up to them. We don't have a singular recommendation or requirement for SPF. If the customer only sends via XMission, the following SPF record is relatively safe:

Host !! Record Type !! Value
@ (base domain) || TXT || "v=spf1 a mx include:_spf.xmission.com ~all"

Valid SPF for XMission with additional sending services
Sometimes it is necessary to have mailing list or other services that need to send emails so having multiple SPF records be strung together becomes necessary. Fortunately the fairly lenient syntax of SPF records makes this easy to do, here is our default record compared to some merged records:

Hosts Generating Emails !! Example of Merged SPF Record
Default XMission || v=spf1 a mx include:_spf.xmission.com ~all
XMission plus Mailchimp || v=spf1 include:_spf.xmission.com include:servers.mcsv.net ~all
Forwarding
Important note about forwarding (ie automatically redirecting mail from one email address to another, not hitting the forward button):

Forwarding (under most circumstances) <em>BREAKS</em> SPF. If a domain has a "-all" ("reject all other mail" aka "Fail") policy in their SPF record, mail will be rejected by any servers respecting SPF after the server performing the forward. Users should keep this in mind when choosing a policy. This is why we suggest "~all" ("SoftFail") when you initially configure SPF.

Alias Domains
Domain aliases that are used for sending email with "From:" addresses will need SPF & DKIM records configured.

All customers are strongly encouraged to configure SPF & DKIM records for all alias domains and parked domains to prevent possible abuse.

DKIM
DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM) is similar to SPF in that it uses a TXT record on the domain to define a sending policy for that domain. Where it differs is that it uses public key cryptography with this sending policy. A public key is added to that TXT record and any message that is signed with the private key (and thus validates with the public key) is then considered valid.

DKIM will break automatic responders, like Out of Office or Vacation replies. This is due to how DKIM verifies the sender, and how automated replies are generated and sent. This is intentional, and is a consideration that needs to be made when limiting sending from your domain via DKIM.

Adding DKIM to an XMission Domain
We have a single private key for XMission DKIM signing. We can sign DKIM with this key on any domain sending out through XMission. It works for Zimbra domains, virtmail, and SMTP relay. To enable this feature for a domain, two things need to happen:

* The domain needs proper DNS for our domainkey key (see below)
* The domain needs to be added to XMission routing config as one with DKIM signing.

DKIM DNS
Add the following two TXT records to the domain.

Note: Once added you must contact [mailto:support@xmission.com support@xmission.com] to add your domain to XMission's DKIM routing file and complete the process:

Host !! Record Type !! Value
xmission._domainkey || TXT || "v=DKIM1; t=y; k=rsa; p=MIGfMA0GCSqGSIb3DQEBAQUAA4GNADCBiQKBgQCzWmoe0tzQkSUzMqliwcQQ5zY1HKk4z+Wgp+dRCRe7MmSBPftE9r5Lx1QfTfF/J8gl4k9tFsUvUBap0fk1VGMYUG/2LynVuzpkCI4JlUKF5fbx+MDNZrVi0aX73Edjd9trU6NKldVnhNg1RixDLa4aB04XJviy6+3P1h3IHNaZ0QIDAQAB"
_domainkey || TXT || "t=y; o=~;"

Reminder: XMission DNS systems do not require entry of the quotation marks on the records above. External DNS system may require quotation marks.

Multiple Email Hosts with DKIM
It is possible to use more than one host with DKIM, though this is only possible if the DNS records used to announce the public key for the security handshake don't share subdomains with each other.

Definition of a Domain
A domain name is a word or set of words followed by a suffix (e.g.: xmission.com) that can be associated with many Internet services. The most popular association is for web pages (e.g.: http://www.xmission.com). Domain names are also used with mail (e.g.: username@xmission.com), ftp, and several other popular services. The way a domain name is linked to a service is through DNS or Domain Name Services. DNS links a name to an IP address (a set of numbers that identifies each individual machine connected to the Internet). Nearly everything on the Internet has an IP address in one form or another. Linking a domain name to an IP address makes it easier for people to remember. For example, if you wanted to go to XMission's home page, you would find it easier to remember www.xmission.com than the IP address, which is 198.60.22.4.

Domain Registration
To register a new domain, you must first have an XMission account (@XMission.com). Existing customers can, then, go to the domain registration system to either register a new domain or transfer an existing domain from another registrar.

Domain Registration System
New Domains
On our registration page enter the domain name you would like to register in the box labeled <span class="button">Register a Domain:</span> followed by clicking Check Availability.

If the domain is available, you will be allowed to continue the registration.

You will be presented with a estimated domain cost and login:

Pricing
Domain pricing depends on the TLD you are registering with XMission. XMission supports most TLD's starting with .com, .net. and .org. Should you move or decide to leave XMission, this domain will remain yours for the duration of the time purchased. Domains purchased via XMission are transferable to other registrars. The domain registration fee will be billed to your XMission account at completion. For complete pricing on domains please contact our sales team.

Domain Management
XMission is a reseller for Tucows Domains, to manage your domain after it is registered you will need to create a Username and Password. Note: This does not have to be the same as your XMission username and password, so be certain that you don't lose it.

Client
* New client - If you are new to XMission registration you will be a new client. Do not use this feature if you've registered domains with XMission prior. If you register more than one domain with XMission and use "New client" for each domain you will have unique profiles for each one and will not be able to manage them all under one login.

* Existing client - If you have registered a domain with XMission in the past you will need to provide the domain name and use the Username and Password you created at that time. If you have forgotten the username or password please contact support.

Whois Contact
All domain registrations require who is information. Please fill out the requested information for Owner, Contact and Billing. Note: ICANN requires this information to be valid and current. It will be verified time to time and if the verification is not completed your domain will be placed on hold.

You can check the boxes "Same as" if your organization does not have unique contacts and click VERIFY ORDER.

Once you have verified all required information has been provided and click <span class="button">ORDER NOW!</span>.

Domain Renewing
When your domain is up for renewal, OpenSRS, the registrar we resell through, will send a paper invoice to the billing address on the domain. As an additional reminder, XMission will send an email reminder to the account that the domain was registered to. The charge for an extra year will be charged along with your next month of Internet services. If you do not wish to renew, please contact accounting and notify them that you would like the domain to lapse.

Day 0 to day -40
During the Grace Period, the domain name is still considered to be owned by you, the registrant, and the WHOIS information continues to display the registrant's information (or WHOIS Privacy, if applicable).

During the 40 days following the expiry date (Grace Period) you can reinstate the domain name simply by renewing it.

Redemption: Days -40 to -70
One of the most costly things to happen to a domain is when they go into a redemption, days -40 to -70.

After the 40 day Grace Period, if the domain name has not been renewed, it may be queued for deletion and eventually dropped or auctioned off

Important: Once the domain name is queued to enter the Live Auction, it cannot be redeemed by the original registrant.

Live Auction will take place from day -41 to -45.

If your domain name was not sent to the Live Auction, you can redeem your domain name during the 30 day Redemption Period.

The cost for bringing a domain out of redemption is $80 dollars that includes the 1 year renewal.

-70 to -75
After the Redemption Period, if the domain name has not been auctioned off and acquired by another party, it is dropped and made available for re-registration by the general public.

-70 to day -100
It is possible that a company called YummyNames, owned by Tucows, may decide to purchase the expired domain during the redemption period. They may decide to retain the domain name or sell it, depending on the Fair Market Value.

Domain Transferring
If you are transferring a domain to XMission from another registrar, go to our domains management page and select <span class="button">Transfer a Domain to XMission</span>. You will be guided through the rest of the process as if you were registering a new domain. Another year will be added to your existing term. (E.g. If you registered for a year with another registrar and there is still 6 months left, you will still have that 6 months in addition to your new registration duration with XMission.)

NOTE: In order to successfully transfer a domain, XMission requires customers to keep their email addresses current.

When a customer decides to transfer a domain, they will receive a series of emails with instructions on the process. However, the following challenges often arise:
# The email never arrives due to spam filters, etc.
# The customer may not respond quickly enough to the emails. After 5 days, the customer must start the transfer again.
# The customer may have the wrong email address associated with the domain.
# The customer may not have their password for the domains management page, which is separate from their XMission account password.

To successfully transfer a domain, the following conditions must exist:
# A domain cannot be in a locked or hold status.
# For reseller to reseller transfers - or registrar to registrar transfers - the domain must have resided with the losing registrar for more than 60 days since it was first registered or transferred there.
# Transfers add one year to the domain's registration; therefore, the gaining reseller must have a sufficient balance for the renewal in order to complete the transfer request.
# Domain names that are expired but not deleted (up to 40 days past the expiry date, for most TLDs) can be transferred.
# The current administrative contact's email address must be valid, to allow for the confirmation of the transfer request.

NOTE: A domain's name servers cannot be changed during a registrar transfer. The nameservers will remain the same during the transfer, and they can be changed once the domain has reached the receiving registrar.

Extra Info

Not all registrars handle transfers/renewals or registrations the same as our reseller. Some places don't want to let domains go so they drag their feet and make it difficult which is annoying but there really is nothing we can do about it.
Modifying Domain Contact Information
Every time Contact information is modified, registered, or transferred; ICANN requires all accredited registrars to verify your new contact details. The XMission Domains system will email you a critical message containing a Subject line containing: "VERIFICATION REQUIRED - ..." The body of the email contains links to the ICANN policy on Contact modifications and a link from the URL "approve.domainadmin.com" which you *must* follow to approve the changes. As a security measure, if the changes are not approved the domain will be suspended. Suspension means the domain will be prevented from transferring, the contact information will not be updated, and all domain related services which stop working which includes items such as web hosting and email. If you received this message in error or suspect phishing, please notify XMission Support.

DNS Services
XMission offers additional DNS services, which many hosting packages already include. You may want to use these in addition to a hosting package. They're also available for those who only require one of these services and not an entire hosting package. Please see our Pricing for a complete price list.

Primary DNS
The authoritative primary source for domain service direction. (E.g. Tells the whole world at which IP address to find where to send mail for mydomain.com or what IP address is associated with bob.mydomain.com.)

Secondary DNS
Back-up source for domain service direction. This is only necessary if the primary source does not answer.

Parking
Holding a registered domain with no associated services.

Alias
A domain name that resolves to another domain name. (E.g. http://www.example.com would open the same file as http://www.example/webpage.html) An alias will keep the domain the visitor entered in the address bar of their browser.

Redirect
A domain name that's directed to another part of your web site. (E.g. http://subdomain.example.com would open the files under /home/users/a/acctname/subdomain, or another chosen directory.)

Domain Locking
When locking is enabled for a domain, any requests to transfer the domain to another registrar or hosting company will automatically fail. This can be used to prevent fraudulent transfers of the domain, while locking is enabled. Domain locking is handled through the OpenSRS Domain Management Portal.

WHOIS/Domain Privacy
Our registrar OpenSRS provides Domain Name WHOIS Privacy by default, hiding the identity of a domain Registrant when someone does a WHOIS lookup on that Registrant’s domain. The benefit of having WHOIS Privacy is that the Registrant’s identity, including address, phone number, and email address, is shielded from spammers, identity thieves, scammers, and other undesirables. WHOIS privacy is handled through the OpenSRS Domain Management Portal. Once logged in, select Reseller Contact, then next to Enable Whois Privacy select Hide, and lastly hit save.

Contact Privacy provides slightly more protection but is deemed unnecessary by most customers and costs $5.00 per domain yearly and is a non-refundable fee.

You can enable Contact Privacy for a domain at any time. If enabled, it expires at the same time as the domain name. If the domain is set to auto-renew, Contact Privacy also auto-renews (and incurs any associated cost) at the same time.

If someone tries to contact an email address associated with a domain that is protected by Contact Privacy, they receive an auto-responder message instructing them to visit the Contact Privacy page in order to reach the registrant.

Recommended Routers
When it comes to your connection, your router is one of the most important devices you can add to your home network. We know that routers are not cheap, however in order to meet the demand of your daily wifi needs, you may need to invest a little more money in a router that will cover your entire home with little dead spots.

Keep in mind that while any gigabit router is compatible, XMission recommends the following products based on feedback from our staff and customers. The products below are not required for service. You should choose a router that fits your budget.

* Please remember XMission cannot guarantee advertised speeds over a wireless connection. When available we recommend the use of Ethernet Cables.
For intermediate users, or those who would like to take advantage of the full capabilities of the XMission Network, we recommend Ubiquiti's UniFi wireless line: a proprietary mesh-like network environment, commonly used in enterprise-level deployments. == Placement of your router ==
The placement of your router is very important. Your wireless signal will need to travel from your router to where you are in your home. Putting your router in a utility closet is probably not the best choice, if your utility closet is in your basement and you spend all day upstairs. You may want to reconsider a more central location for your router. Materials such as concrete, metal, brick and sheetrock - you know the stuff your walls are made from - can and will impact the strength of your wireless signal.

Router Issues
If you continue to have issues with your current router, it may be time to upgrade. If after talking with our support department and we have walked you through factory resetting your router and updating the firmware with no change to performance, then it may be time to get a new router. You can visit our Router and Wireless Troubleshooting guide to help you further.
* XMission has tested and verified that the following equipment is supported on the XMission and UTOPIA networks. Keep in mind that while any gigabit router is compatible, XMission recommends the following products based on feedback from our staff and customers. These products are not required for service.
* The model number may change depending on the most recent revision from the manufacturer and may have different firmware versions. While it is unlikely, any changes in models and firmware may differ enough from the equipment we have tested to cause issues. We recommend that you document your manufacturer, model, and software version for the best support experience.
* XMission cannot guarantee advertised speeds over wireless Internet. When available we recommend the use of Ethernet cables.
Extra-Large (8+ Rooms) Spaces
These spaces are typically over 4,500 square feet. These spaces are usually large homes and have more than eight rooms.

<span style="color: #ff0000;">NOTE:</span> In extra-large spaces, XMission strongly recommends the use of Ethernet wiring when available, as wireless may result in poor performance and often will not reflect the speed of the XMission network.

Wireless Mesh Network

For most users, a whole-home mesh WiFi system will suffice, usually with the compromise of trading WiFi coverage for wireless speed. A mesh WiFi system typically has a main router module that connects directly to your UTOPIA equipment. Satellite nodes or access points that connect to the main module can then be placed around your house for full WiFi coverage. Together, these create a single and seamless wireless network and share the same wireless name (SSID) and password.

Please note: While Mesh can help cover more floor space, it often trades coverage for speed. You may see lower speeds than expected going with a mesh option.

For intermediate users, or those who would like to take advantage of the full capabilities of the XMission Network, we recommend Ubiquiti's UniFi wireless line: a proprietary mesh-like network environment, commonly used in enterprise-level deployments. == Not Recommended Routers ==

In our testing and supporting of equipment we have found a few routers with the following negative qualities:
:* Difficult to work with
:* Not fully supported by XMission on the UTOPIA network
:* Do not work on XMission's network

We suggest that our customers do not use the following routers.

Not Recommended Routers
In our testing and supporting of equipment we have found a few routers with the following negative qualities:
:* Difficult to work with
:* Not fully supported by XMission on the UTOPIA network
:* Do not work on XMission's network

We suggest that our customers do not use the following routers.

style="width: 375px;padding:5px;text-align:left;vertical-align:top;"| Modem/Router Combo <br><br>

style="width: 375px;padding:5px;text-align:left;vertical-align:top;"| Modem/Router combo's are not supported by XMission. Cable/DSL router combo devices are capable of providing the appropriate routing however we can not guarantee service.
