New page

Salt Lake City, Utah (August 18, 2008) – XMission, Utah’s largest independent Internet service provider, has teamed up with the Utah Open Source Foundation, as a sponsor of the organization’s second annual event, the Utah Open Source Conference 2008 (UTOSC). The conference will take place Thursday, August 28th 2008 to Saturday, August 30th at Salt Lake Community College Redwood Campus.

Building upon the success of the 2007 conference, and with the support of sponsors like XMission, the Utah Open Source Foundation continues to extend the scope of its annual conference. UTOSC had over 250 attendees in 2007, and expects over 400 in 2008, making it the largest Utah community-based technology event in history.

“The Utah Open Source Conference has been an amazing experience full of geek energy and spirit,” said open source user Lars Rasmussen. “Conference attendees, keynote speakers, breakout presenters, and conference organizers have done an amazing job of creating a wonderful, fun, well-executed event.”

UTOSC 2008 will again welcome community and business leaders, user group communities, system administrators, programmers and hobbyists. Open to attendees of all ages and abilities, this conference hopes to grow the local open source community by creating new groups or growing current groups who discuss and use open source. The main theme of the UTOSC 2008 is “HOWTO...”

“The 'HOW TO...” theme will allow us to get the technology to the community and business side,” said UTOSC founder, Clint Savage. “Educational institutions can learn how to adopt open source into their schools and classrooms. In addition, educators can learn about the plethora of available open source educational software.”

While this conference is presented by, for, and about Utah's open source communities, UTOS invites those who aren't as familiar with the open source community to come and learn what it is about. Attendees can learn about free software and receive advice about using open source tools. UTOSC 2008 also aims to educate members of the local business community about leveraging open source software in their business environment.

UTOSC 2008 will consist of four main tracks; community, education, business and technology. These
tracks will be available in three levels; Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced. Joe Brockmeier from Novell and Paul Frields from Red Hat Inc. will present keynotes for the conference. Topics to be discussed will include: 2008 Troubleshooting Challenge, Asterisk, Python, VIM, PERL. Audio/Video Tools, Ubuntu LTS, Apache, Nagios, MythTV/Linux Multimedia, OpenSuse, Fedora, Drupal, Data Encryption, Document Management, KVM, Open Source and Windows, GIMP , Wordpress, How to write a HOWTO, Ruby (on Rails), LTSP FamilySearch Platform for software Developers, Komodo, Home Automation , Puppet, Django, Extjs, Lasers and Webcams, Nagios and many others.

The event’s location is as follows and includes free parking:
Science & Industry Building
Salt Lake Community College
4600 South Redwood Road
Salt Lake City, UT 84123

UTOSC will provide wireless Internet connectivity for all attendees.
