NOTES: **This document assumes you have already connected your Pipeline and can connect to the configuration via the serial port interface, if you have not done this step, refer to the setup instructions in the first few chapters of the Pipeline Manual. **These instructions should also work on Pipeline 50, 85, (and possibly even a Pipeline 25), but some differences might exist with that equipment. As well, different revisions of pipeline software will place some of these settings in different places, or not at all. If you don't find a setting where indicated in this documentation, look for it elsewhere but don't worry if you don't find it. TIPS: **To achieve an initial connection with a new Pipeline, you will need to set the port speed in your terminal program to 9600. After completing Part I, you will want to adjust your port speed to 57600. **After you've set the IP address on the pipeline and saved that setting, you should be able to telnet to the pipeline. Telnet connections are generally faster and smoother than serial connections. **If you have a hard time moving around the menus, try "Ctrl-n" to go down and "Enter" to select. **Every time that you are prompted to "2=Exit and discard" or "1=Exit and accept" after making changes, be sure and select "2=Exit and accept". **Unless noted here, leave your pipeline at the default settings. If you're not sure if your other settings are at default, you might want to set your pipeline back to factory defaults. Refer to Appendix C for details. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Part I "SYSTEM": 1. Select "System" from the Main Edit Menu 2. Select "Sys Config" 3. Set "Name" to your XMission Account Name 4. Set "Term Rate" to "57600" 5. Set "Console" to "Standard" 6. Set "Remote Mgmt" to "Yes" 7. Set "Switch Usage" to "Unused" (if present) 8. Hit the left arrow key twice to go back to the main menu 9. You should now adjust your terminal program's port speed to 57600. Part II "CONGIGURE...": 1. Select "Configure..." from the Main Edit Menu 2. Set "Switch Type" as appropriate for your area. Set "My Num B" to your second seven-digit phone number 6. Set "SPID 1" to your first SPID 7. Set "SPID 2" to your second SPID * The phone company should have given you two spids and two phone numbers to go with your ISDN line, for example, if the phone numbers were 123-4567 and 123-4568 and your area code was 801, you would enter your information like this: My Num A: 1234567 My Num B: 1234568 SPID 1: 80112345671111 SPID 2: 80112345681111 **NOTE: Steps 8-11 will not be available in some versions of software 8. Set "Encaps" to "PPP" * If you are purchasing a bonded account (which allows you to use both channels), you must set "Encaps" to "MPP", however, you must make sure that XMission has set you up for MPP before you can do this, or it will not connect. 7. Set "Dial #" to your local dialup ISDN number * Refer to Part II, step 16 for details 8. Leave "Calling #" empty 9. Set "Route IP" to "Yes" 10. Set "Route IPX" to "N/A" 11. Set "Bridge" to "No" 12. Set "Send PW" to your XMission dialup password (should be set already) 16. Set "Aux Send PW" to "N/A" (if applicable) 17. If you have set "Encaps" to "MPP", and will be using both channels, do these steps as well. If you have "Encaps" set to "PPP", go to step #18 a. Set "DBA Monitor" to "Transmit-Recv" b. To get a subnet, send email to "domains@xmission.com" with the following information: a. Your XMission username b. Your domain name (if you have one) c. How many computers you currently have on your network d. How many computers you expect to have in the next year Be sure and tell domains that you need the following information in order to set up your Pipeline: a. Network address b. Subnet size c. Gateway address d. CIDR number (see Appendix A) Appendix C "Resetting Your Pipeline to Factory Defaults": NOTE: Only do this if you have the proper serial cable available and make sure that you have all of the necessary instructions available to you since you won't be able to connect to the Internet with your pipeline until it has been reconfigured. You must use a serial cable since your ip address will be erased and you won't be able to telnet to your pipeline until you've reset your IP address. 1. Connect the proper serial cable from your computer to your pipeline 2. From the Main Edit Menu, choose "Configure" and then "Ctrl-d". 3. From the menu, choose "D=Diagnostics" to be taken to a command prompt 4. Type "fclear" and hit "Enter" 5. Type "nvramclear" and hit "Enter" (this will take some time) 6. Power cycle your pipeline (turn it off and back on) 7. Your pipeline will POST(Power On Self Test) and boot to factory defaults TIP: This might be a good time to upgrade your pipeline. Refer to Ascend's tech tech support or your Pipeline documentation for Details. XMission's techs are not qualified to help in such matter Appendix D "Screenshots from typical pipeline setup": NOTE: An important step in troubleshooting many issues with the pipeline should be to look at the "Link" status in the top middle box. As show below, proper ISDN line status (regardless of whether or not you're dialed into XMission) is indicated by "Link D", as shown below.
