How to switch your Windows Live email from POP to IMAP
Learn how to switch the setup of your Windows Live Mail application from POP to IMAP.
Note: The instructions contained in this article only apply to users who mistakenly have legacy email accounts via POP. Using POP means you voluntarily chose not to retain emails on the mail server after downloading them to the email client and that you alone are/were/will ever be responsible for backups of that data.
Setup Instructions
- Right click on the configured account and click Properties.
- In the Properties window, click on the Servers tab to verify that the incoming mail server type is set to POP.
Windows Live Mail Properties window, Servers tab.
- Click on the Advanced tab.
- Under the Delivery header, check if the Leave a copy of messages on server checkbox is selected. If not, check the checkbox and click OK.
Windows Live Mail Properties window, Advanced tab.
Switching from POP to IMAP
- On the Live Mail home page, click Add Email under the Accounts tab.
- When the "Add your email accounts" window appears, enter your full Zimbra email address and password.
- Check the Manually configure server settings checkbox. Then, click Next.
Windows Live Mail - Add your email accounts screen should now show.
- Select IMAP from the drop-down menu and enter the following server details. Then, click Next:
- Server address (incoming): zimbra.xmission.com
- Port: 993
- Server address (outgoing): smtp.xmission.com
- Port: 465 (Must enable SSL with use of port 465)
- You should now see the "Your email account was added" success page.
- Click the [Finish] button to save and exit.
Moving Emails from the POP to IMAP Profile
If the option to delete emails from server was initially chosen during POP account configuration, emails would have been deleted from the mail server as they were downloaded to the email client, so the newly configured IMAP account will not contain these emails. THOSE MESSAGES EXIST ONLY ON YOUR DEVICE. DO NOT DELETE THEM UNTIL YOU KNOW YOU HAVE A BACKUP.
To avoid losing these emails during the switch from POP to IMAP, you must select the emails contained in the various folders (Inbox, Sent, Drafts, Junk, Trash and Etc) on your POP account, and then drag and drop them into the respective folders of your newly configured IMAP account.
Microsoft offers a How-to page on converting Windows Live Mail POP account to IMAP but it requires Microsoft credentials to view. if you have such credentials you can learn more here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/search
Deleting the POP Profile
After your existing emails have been moved from your POP account to their corresponding IMAP folders (and after ensuring that no emails are missing), you can delete the existing POP-configured profile and its respective folders from your mail client. Then, continue using email through your new IMAP profile. However, like we mentioned before, Windows Live Mail is no longer supported by anyone. Please always use modern and secure email applications. You can always use https://zimbra.xmission.com to view your mail from any web browser.
