- Connect the serial end (metal) of your management cable to Com port 1 on your computer and the other end (plastic) into the management port of your Cisco router.
- Click Start, go to Programs, Accessories, Communications, and select Hyperterminal.
- Double-click on Hyperterm.
- Enter any name for the connection you'd like and choose an icon.
- Click OK.
- In the Connect using: field, choose Direct to Com1.
- Click OK.
- Change the Bits per second: to 38400.
- Change the Flow control: to None.
- Click OK.
- Hit the enter key and you should get a password: prompt.
Note: If you don't get a password: prompt, to check to be sure the management cable is plugged into Com1. Disconnect and reconnect again.
